Brand new hot tub is here along with an expanded deck area for you to enjoy it! Please take advantage of our special. This is a new property that I have just purchased. Come on out while this introductory special is in effect. All I ask is that you provide me with some constructive feedback so we can make this property even more wonderful than it already is. If this one is booked, look at my other property on vrbo 609710.
This is an authentic log cabin that has survived the years right in the heart of Mid-town Ruidoso! Don't choose this if you want to be alone in the middle of the woods. Choose this cabin if you want the ultimate in convenience to all the shops, bars and restaurants of Mid-town Ruidoso while being able to go out your back door and play in the river and enjoy the fascinating parade of wildlife going by.
THE CABIN: I have tried to determine when this cabin was built, but have not yet been successful. When you drive up to this cabin, you can imagine how Ruidoso was in the ‘50s and ‘60s when it became known as “The Playground of the Southwest”. If these walls could talk, oh, the stories they could tell. Over the years this cabin has undergone numerous repairs and remodels and today it stands as a reminder of the past while also showing off as a gem of modern technology. The windows have been there for a while and most are stuck from all the coats of paint, but they are reflective of the period.
When you enter the cabin the living room and the kitchen greet you with lovely colors and a décor that is reminiscent of the period during which the cabin was built. There are a few modern touches, like the flat screen TV and the electric fireplace. Maybe one day I will figure out how to integrate a dishwasher in the mix, but until then please enjoy the charm of the 1950s.
The path from this area to the master bedroom is either through the kitchen or the bathroom. The floor plan is really simple. That’s how they built ‘em back then.
The bedroom is comfy and warm. The knotty pine paneling provides a authentic log cabin feel. Just relax in the comfy king bed with the retro quilt and if the temperature is right, open the window and let the sound of the Rio Ruidoso lull you to sleep.
Oh did somebody say AIR CONDITIONING? The main floor of the cabin has complete climate control provided by two window units. One in the master bedroom and one in the living room. They are capable of providing heat as well as air conditioning that will flat freeze you out of there if you want it to!
Next we go back out the front door and to the BUNK HOUSE basement which is under the north end (furthest from the street) of the house. As you enter the basement door you find the bunkhouse. The two twin beds are really comfy and the décor is right off the ranch! This recently remodeled area of the house also contains the washer / dryer. Be careful of your head if you are a tall person. This is a unique and fantastic area which will create lasting memories of adventure and independence for your children. Please understand this is not a place for children that need to be in a bedroom next to yours. This area has its own “front door” and no bathroom. In my personal opinion I think this is a great space for ages 11 and up, but you should plan on the younger children being upstairs on the fold-out.
THE PARKING: Oh this is the secret sauce. 95% of the time parking is not a problem. You can park in the public lot anytime night or day. It is just to the west of the cabin. I will put a parking pass in the form of a postcard in the cabin for you. With that you can park one vehicle in front of 221 Rio which is right next door (east side). You see most times in Ruidoso the public parking lot is not quite full, but during holidays and special events, parking is indeed at a premium, so it’s really nice to have that private parking space.
MID-TOWN: This is where the action is. Restaurants, bars, shops, it is all within a short walk of your front door. No DUI’s while staying here. You can Rock and Roll at Quarters or Country and Western dance at WPS (Win Place or Show). You can close the place down and walk home. If late night is not your thing, you have a choice of five of the best restaurants in Ruidoso within a two block walk. If you don’t like to go to restaurants, you have some of the most amazing clothes shops within two blocks. If you don’t like any of the above, then there’s always wine and desert! Yes within one block there is an amazing cupcake shop and a lovely selection of wine to taste and take home. I can go into more detail later!
THE BACKDOOR: Every coin has two sides and this is no exception. You have all the fun and excitement of Mid-town out your front door, and all the peace and quiet of nature out your back door. Yes, there is a little grey area in the middle, the rest of the tourists that are parking in the public lot can look at you in the yard relaxing – just remember that they are just jealous. We put a nice curtain on the hot tub to afford you some needed privacy! Back to Nature awaits you out the back door. We have a lovely porch with a great view of the river and plenty of comfy furniture to sit on and relax while enjoying the wonderful climate. There is also a gas grill there for your outdoor cooking pleasure. There are some wonderful new steps leading down to a new porch that is just feet from the river. I am trying to get some trout to come hang out there. We’ll see how that goes in future years. We have a great fenced yard for the kids and the dogs to run around in and play and there is a brand new hot tub to soak the soreness out of those muscles after a hard day of hiking, skiing, riding, or shopping.
We certainly hope that you will choose our little RETRO ON THE RIVER when you plan your vacation to Ruidoso. We have done what we can to make it a wonderful experience for you.
Thanks again. We hope to see you soon.

This is a great cabin for those who want to be connected to the town of Ruidoso while still being in the wilderness. While the cabin is situated just walking distance to the shops and restaurants in downtown Ruidoso, it is along the river and surrounded by pine trees - so it is the best of both worlds. The yard is large and fenced in, so if you have kids it is a nice and safe environment to run around and play in. The cabin itself is cozy with a retro feel, but has all the amenities you will need, including satellite TV, DVD player, and wifi. It has a master bedroom, kitchen, and living room in the main cabin, and if you need more room, there is a smaller bedroom below the main cabin - we didn't need it as the main cabin was enough space for our family (2 adults and 3 children), but I can see as our kids get older it would be a nice room for them to have.
Oh, and the hot tub is great too.
We had a great time in the cabin and would definitely recommend "Retro on the River"!
Absolutely in love with this beautiful little cabin. It had all the comforts of home combined with the freshness of vacation. There is only 1 bathroom to share between the 6 of us, but a little "Poo-Pourri" goes a long way, lol. We did not realize that the downstairs room was disconnect to the upstairs, but luckily our kiddos are older. I wish I had looked into the pet friendliness of the cabin. Completely fenced in with a dog house! Our little Yorkie would have loved to stay with us. We will definitely be back for another amazing stat at "Retro on the River".
We really enjoyed our stay at Retro On the River. It's a cozy old cabin located in the middle of Ruidoso where you can walk to everything. We went skiing on Ski Apache and relaxed away achey muscles in the hot tub later. Great place for our little dogs who were right at home. Reed (the owner) is a really nice person who made sure all of our needs were met and our questions were answered. It's not fancy, but it is definitely homey.
My wife and 2 kids had the best time! The Cabin is amazing and in the best location. Within minutes of walking distance to all the shops and restaurants. If you want to stay at an awesome place, relax enjoy the river and town you must stay here. The owner is very accommodating as well. We will definitely be back again and again!
My husband, 2 year old daughter, mother, and I stated at this lovely home for our trip to New Mexico! The house is so charming, I loved that the new appliances had a retro feel. It was also very clean! The master bedroom's (upstairs) access to the balcony was so nice, I enjoyed my coffee while listening to the stream below while sitting in the comfortable furniture outside. The hot tub was also lovely! The downstairs room with the twin beds was perfect for my mom who wanted her own space. The location of this property was SO CONVENIENT! We were able to walk anywhere on the main strip that we wanted to go but it was also very easy to drive to any other out of waking distance locations.
My husband and I, plus our dogs recently returned to "Retro on the River Cabin" in Ruidoso, New Mexico. This is our home away from home. So peaceful. The yard with the river is the best part. Also, the overhanging porch for friends to come bbq or just relax. We were even blessed as to have had a white Christmas.
The deer were abundant. This spot has everything and one can just walk into town to shop or restaurant hop! I will never stay anywhere else in Ruidoso!
This cabin gave us an authentic feel of the town. It's right in the middle of everything. We enjoyed walking and finding cool places to eat. Ski apache was a good place to snowboard. The cabin was very welcoming when spending the day in town.
Cool kitchen!!
Such an enchanting stay in the Land of Enchantment-- the retro ambiance set the tone for a very relaxing, cordial atmosphere. The shops were convenient and we felt we were in the middle of all the amenities the area had to offer. Loved the appliances and furnishings, everything was so inviting-- the bunkhouse was amazing Truly appreciated the additional parking space and peacefulness of the unit next door--- great neighborhood and friendly locals. Best of all, it was great knowing that Reed was just a phone call away.
Thank you Reed for making us feel welcome-- hats off to you and your hidden treasure in Ruidoso, NM
We enjoyed our stay in the little cabin so very much. It was cozy and clean and had everything we needed for our stay. The cabin is convenient to Ruidoso shopping and great places to eat. The bed was comfortable, the back deck overlooking the river was nice and the hot tub was amazing!
Highly recommend Retro on the River for anyone wanting a nice relaxing stay in Ruidoso, New Mexico.
We wanted to attend the Cowboy Symposium, stay close in town and have our own space to spread out. This little cottage with its retro feel was the perfect location for us. It was clean, comfortable, and convenient. The retro kitchen was beyond cute as well as wonderfully functional. It reminded me of my grandmothers' kitchens and brought on a wave of nostalgia, all in a good way. The king-sized bed was very comfortable and the bath while small by today's standards has a great shower. We enjoyed coffee on the back porch and watching the six point buck who was munching and resting just below us as well as being able to walk to all the cute shops. The helpfulness of owner Reed was icing on the cake. We couldn't have been happier with our choice of Retro on the River.
When traveling, it is important where we stay especially to my three teen daughters. This Beautiful Cabin met all our expectations,Reed, the owner made me feel welcomed, even before we arrived, attentive to all our questions in a very timely manner. We definitely recommend this place, Thank You Reed,
My husband and I found this cute, cozy cabin in the center of Ruidoso NM with walking distance to all my favorite shopping spots, but it also gave us the feeling of being isolated in the forest!!! The hot tub was awesome!! When our son joined us for one day, they went down from the cabins deck to the river and walked through the water, along with the deer that visited! Making awesome memories! The cabin also came with awesome new appliances that have the 1950's look! It also came with all the things you might need to cook inside or out! The balcony was my favorite, which overlooks the wooded area and river below!! The hummingbirds were a couple of feet away from the comfortable sitting area.
The only bad thing, was that our stay was to short!!
My wife and I stayed here for the third straight year. Cozy cabin, secluded in the middle of town. Yes....that's what I said. SECLUDED IN THE MIDDLE OF TOWN!!! You step out of your bedroom onto a deck that overlooks the little river, and there you relax. Get ready to go to town? Walk out the front door of the cabin, go a few yards to the stairs that take you to the main street (Sudderth), and there you have enough eating and shopping options to keep you busy for a few days. All within walking distance. Forget about having to look for a parking spot! The location of this cabin and the deck off the bedroom sold us immediately. Needless to say, we will be back and back and back. The owner is a great guy who is very responsive to your questions and needs, and we appreciate the opportunity to stay in this tranquil setting each year.
My girlfriends from high school and I get together every year since graduation. Each year one chooses and arranges the trip. This year was my year and I wanted it to be special. I found this cabin and thought it would be perfect....and it was. It has all the wonderful comforts of home, tv, internet, crockpot (that was something I would never think of), iron, hair dryer, etc but it felt so cozy being on the river. The hot tub was a plus and the outside patio complete with grill and outdoor fan was wonderful. As we sat in the hot tub a few deer came long. Even though the cabin is located in the central part of the shopping, it was very quite and seriously, you didn't realize you were in the middle of town. This place gives you the comfort of close to shopping and dining, but isolated enough to give you that awesome country feel. I know that most of the girls were excited to bring their families here and neither can I. Looking forward to coming back often. ALSO...the owner gives you his cell number and is available whenever you call.
Rented this cozy cabin once before and didn't want to leave this time so will definitely rent again. Owner very accomodating, cabin very clean & well equipped. Love the outdoors deck by hot tub and upstairs deck overlooking the water. Grill outdoors while watching the deer in the cool mountain breeze or take a short walk to town. Return to your comfy, cool or warm (a/c works well) bed. Parking scarce in town but available at cabin which is a plus as well.
We had so much fun in with this space during our getaway! There were a few cobwebs here and there from curtain rods to wall and behind the bed...but HEY! it's a cabin! there i only one bathroom on the entire property but thats really the only negative thing i have to say.
What I did love far outweighs any negative experience! theres a HOT TUB and wooden decks to enjoy! one deck to sit and enjoy the hot tub, another off the master bedroom with a view of the "backyard" (which included the hottub and creek to name a few thing included in said view) and another down near the creek with a bench. this cabin is right smack in the middle of the BEST the main street (Sudderth) has to offer. Shops, restaurants, wine tasting, coffee shops and even an irish pub are a minutes walk!
Despite all that the cabin is VERY peaceful. it's the best of ruidoso all in one quaint and gorgeous space!
i HIGHLY recommend it
While searching for a perfect getaway for my birthday we stumbled upon Retro on the River for me, my Mom and my sister. It exceeded our expectations. The patio is perfect for a glass of wine and just listening to the river. The most colorful hummingbirds I've ever seen. The benches down by the river make for perfect mornings with a cup of coffee. Hot tub is so private and perfect for a little music and relaxing mornings or evenings. A perfect plus was the location, it is right in the middle of downtown. You can just walk across the street to great shopping and restaurants. Can't wait to book again and make this an annual birthday trip.
If you enjoy a place with character and historical charm, Retro on the River is right for you. It has the modern day necessities you need without sacrificing timeless character. The property on which it sits has as much character as the cabin itself. This is a great place to stay.
This was an awesome deal! Great rental that gives you a taste of camping with the convenience of the main shopping street directly across from cabin. It was also centrally located in middle of strip. There was plenty of outdoor seating to hang out, the kitchen was stocked with everything needed to cook, small creek out back to drink coffee by in the am. This was easy to book. I would recommend this to my friends and family!
Beautiful and comfy property! All the luxuries and so convenient to everything! We had an amazing time and are planning our next trip back as we speak. LOVE, love, love this retro cabin!
This is a great cabin right in the middle of the Ruidoso excitement. You are literally steps away from main street! But surprisingly quick to enjoy an evening sitting on the wonderful deck enjoying a glass of wine or your morning cup of coffee!! This cabin gives you the true Ruidoso feel. Historic cabin but the owners have taken a lot of care of every detail. The owners are very nice and proud of their Ruidoso gem!!
Clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. We even found a deck of cards that kept our family entertained while the town had a power outage. We would definitely return. Restaurants and shopping all within walking distance (go early because lots close early). Thank for you a lovely stay!
The directions flawless and easy. we arrived to see sunset through tall pines over peaks first night, was so beautiful sitting on BR deck listening to river. We walked across street to burger place and pub....AWESOME. HOUSE.... immaculate, our host outstanding, took care of EVERYTHING I NEVER thought of.by..long distance. I Am unable to say enough Good. All I did wAS show up! Comfortable bed, clean Everything, living room dining combo So roomy and COMFORTABLE. Dishes, linens, appliances.tv with great satellite, PRIVATE IN town center. Its Perfect and Everything top notch in house. Cool bunkhouse, NICE YARD, DECKS, HOT TUB. We visited Fort Stanton, Capitan, ski apache, bonito lake, grindstone lake, and casinos. We shopped local metal worker for cool art piece.. Thank you again!
This was a great place to stay!! Loved being able to walk down town without having to worry about parking etc... And the cabin was great can't wait to come back!
We had a great time in Ruidoso. The location is great. No need to drive anywhere to eat, shop and drink.
We had great snow while we where there, it's really beautiful down by the river with all the snow. Went skiing
during the day and walked to dinner and drinks at night. My wife enjoyed all the shopping just a block away.
The hot tub and deck are awesome and the small deck down by the river was very nice too.
Looking for to going back and exploring the Ruidoso area in the summer! Good fun.
There are so many wonderful things to say about this cabin! It is in an awesome location, walking distance to all the shops downtown as well as a short drive to the ski slopes. It has all the amenities, plus some! The master bed is huge and super comfy. The back deck is ridiculously beautiful and overlooks the river. It's a great place to grill or have morning coffee! The appliances are super cool and truly have a retro feel, while fully functional. The kitchen has all the amenities of home. The tv is big and flat and has all the channels available plus recorded movies. The seperate room downstairs is perfect for kids or friends and provides the feeling of being together but also having your own space! It is pet friendly and has a fenced in yard for your fur babies. The jacuzzi is probably the best part though, it sits on a beautiful deck and has shades to create privacy, but still hear the river flowing! The owner is also very easy to contact and communicate with during the entire booking process and stay. I highly recommend Retro on the River!
Couldn't ask for more prompt and detailed information on the cabin and area from the owner. Love the kitchen's vibe, the whole place was very comfortable and clean. Convenience to shopping, food, and the river... can't beat it. The hot tub is newer, clean, and the kids loved the lights... perfect size for a family. Bonus was the completely fenced yard so our pet was as comfortable during travel as we were.
This cabin is PERFECT in every way. From the moment you arrive you feel like you are home. This was our 4th stay and it never gets old. The back porch over looking the tall pines and the river is the best spot in Ruidoso. This is the closest cabin to mid-town. Walking distance to everything. We love the decor and the owner Reed is so easy to work with. We have never had any problems at this wonderful slice of paradise. We are already planning our next trip. This is a must stay place. We have looked at other cabins, but nothing holds a candle to Retro On The River. You WILL NOT be disappointed. The price is great.
My husband and I went for a quick weekend getaway. Reed was very easy to work with. The cabin was adorable and in a great location. We will definitely be back!
This is my second time at the cabin. We just absolutely love it! Just a walk away from restaurants, shopping, and bars. Your very own hot tub with a nice deck in the yard, as well as a balcony deck! A short drive to the mountain for great skiing! AND it's ALL right on the river. You couldn't ask for much more!
My girlfriend and I stayed at Retro on the river for three nights. We could not of asked for a better place to stay. The cabin is right on the river in downtown Ruidoso, so if you want to go out to the bars and restaurants they are all within walking distance or if you want to have some privacy, the cabin offers a hot tub right on the river and three decks that face the river too relax and have a good time. The yard is nice and fenced in for pets. There is also plenty of parking. Whenever I come back to Ruidoso I will definitely be staying at Retro on the river.
We had a family getaway (2 adults, 2 kids under 4 yrs old) and stayed at Retro on the River. The location was top-notch as the main drag with restaurants and shops was a short walk away.
As the listing advises, be aware that the separate bedroom, which is downstairs, is a completely separate space - only accessed by an outside staircase and a door to the outside. Therefore, our little one's had to stay in the living room on the pull-out couch.
Overall, place was clean and well furnished. Would definitely stay here again.
I stayed here with a couple of buddies for a weekend and it was exactly what we wanted/needed. The yard has more than enough space to enjoy being outside, and the view from the porch overlooking the creek/river is very nice. The interior of the house is well-kept and you don't feel "dirty" like you may in other rentals. Biggest plus (in my opinion) is location. Every time I have visited Ruidoso previously, I would end up parking in the parking lot right next to this house. Didn't have to worry about that this time because I was staying at this house! If you stay here as a visitor from out of town, pretty much everything is within easy walking distance (food, shops, bars, etc.) and the only time you will find yourself driving is either when you want to go to the casino or go skiing.
Also, the owner is easy to work with and very responsive.
This property was an AMAZING find! After staying in three other rentals this year all throughout Ruidoso, this one is the top spot for location! Once you arrive, you will no longer need your vehicle. It is true that you are in walking distance of all this town has to offer: food, shopping, bars, etc. What more could you ask for? In addition to location, this place felt most home, not a cabin. The owner has put so much thought and love into this place you will not feel like a visitor, but rather that you belong there. I would have been perfectly content to stay indefinitely. The outdoor space is to die for, as well. My friend and I spent every morning and early evening on the patio right off the bedroom. Your view is beautiful pine trees, with the sound of the river in the background. Relaxation is the name of the game here and parking was not a problem at all. You will not be disappointed and will be a return customer, as I will be too, no doubt!
We stayed at this cute cabin for a week. The jacuzzi were great after hiking and golf. The deck off the bedroom was perfect for morning coffee and evening wine and painting. The location is very convenient. We loved being able to have our dog with us. The owner was extremely helpful and prompt in responding to our needs.
Definitely 5 stars
This little slice of paradise never ceases to amaze me. Every time we visit, more has been done to improve the property. The owner takes great pride in the property and his guests satisfaction. The 5 stars are not enough. I'd give it 10+++.
That back porch is by far the best one I have seen in Ruidoso that close to Mid-Town. Close to everything you could need. The deer and hummingbirds are abundant here. I sat at the river for an hour in complete silence. A great spot to relax, reflect and renew. Everything you need or could want, you will find here. Don't think twice about this property. You will NOT be disappointed. The vintage style just adds to the beauty of the cabin. Did I already mention the back porch and how you can hear the Rio Ruidoso rushing? I just hated to leave and we will return as soon as possible.
Perfect place to stay if you want to bring your pup and be close to everything!
The fenced yard will keep any dog safe and sound. You can shop and eat all along Midtown without driving. Great place and great owner! Very responsive.
We loved the cabin. We had such a blast around that area. It was easy to get to, right off main strip, on the river, and kid friendly. They had everything there you need to feel at home.
We arrived to the Retro on the River on July 3rd with excitement! My husband, our three boys and I were all so thrilled with what we saw upon our arrival to the cabin. It was very true to the photos and description of the place. You will have everything you need to cook, sleep with great comfort, relax while watching tv, play games or sit outside on the deck in the peace and quite of nature. I thought it might be a little noisy outside since it is so close to town, but I was wrong. You can hear the lulls of the creek bed down below while resting on the elevated deck off the master bedroom. I love the special touch of the curtains around the hot tub for privacy. It gives you that feeling of being pampered while unwinding in the hot tub. The weather was perfect while we were there, but on the last night, it rained and we got to experience the sound of rain on the metal roof which made for us the perfect get away place. We will for sure be returning in the near future.
Loved the cabin. My boys loved hiking the trails around the cabin and playing in the river. This was our second time to stay. We love being close to town and still being close to the river. The owner was amazing. He is always so helpful!
Our family enjoyed our relaxing stay at this cabin. It was pet friendly and convenient to shopping, food and the river! Our kids loved hanging out in the secluded lower level "bunk house" and wading in the river. The hot tub was an added bonus after hiking during the day! The Retro On The River had everything we needed, Thanks!
The House are very beautifull, particulary the look of the 50´s is great.
The location was perfect. We were able ro reach all places by foot. And as already mentioned was the "HOT TUB" the cherry on the cream cake ;)
The next time when we are traveld back to the US, we will come back for weekend.
What a wonderful place! It had the remote getaway feel we were looking for, but with the convenience of being just off one of Ruidoso's main roads. Wine tasting, food, and shopping are all within a three minute walk. Your choice of two decks and a hot tub for relaxing at the end of the day give you plenty of options.
There are also several geocaches within an easy walk from the cabin for all the geocachers out there.
The cabin was excellent, the bed comfortable, and the owner has a good selection of books and DVDs for rainy days.
Speaking of the owner, Reed was very helpful and called to make sure everything was how it should be and answer any questions we had.
Over all it was a great experience and my wife and I would stay at Retro on the River any time we were in Ruidoso. Thanks Reed!
Wonderful cabin, walking distance to shops and restaurants. Hot tub is fabulous. Second bedroom is downstairs and private. Decor is adorable. Lots of space for the dog to roam. Wish I owned it:)
This place was awesome! The beautiful water running behind the cabin with a little deck overlooking the river, the awesome deck and hot tub, the upper patio, great outdoor ambiance! Within walking distance of food, bars, and shopping. This place has so much character and is just adorable. I will definitely be recommending this cabin to family and friends!
Wonderful, adorable place to stay. With 6 people, it can be a little tight. We tripped the breaker one evening to the bunk house. It is within walking distance of some great restaurants.
Very thankful for this place.
It is hard to say how much we enjoyed staying at "Retro on the River". We were struck as soon as we pulled up and saw the little log house. When we entered it was like leaving the stress and chaos of the real world and stepping into a perfect little story book scene. The accommodations were beautiful, clean, nostalgic and still modernly convenient. The short walk up the hill to mid city was too cool. We enjoyed both the touristy spots as well as some of the local flavor and it was a genuine treat. We would recommend this to anyone that needs to relax and forget the day in and day out commotion of their busy lives. You will leave refreshed. Thank you Reed.
This cabin allowed my family and me to have a great experience. The owner is friendly, the cabin is clean, and the location is great. Close to plenty of shops, and not too far from Ski Apache. Will for sure come back in the future!
My family and I enjoyed this comfy and adorable little cabin. It was a perfect fit for our family of 4. It's in town but you don't feel exposed and is in walking distance to shops and restaurants. It snowed while we were there and it was such a beautiful sight with the river flowing behind the cabin. Everything you need is provided which is a huge plus! We enjoyed the weekend snow skiing at Ski Apache which is about a 20 minute drive. The owner, Reed was wonderful and had checked in on us to make sure we arrived safely since we drove in the winter storm. He's such a nice person and takes care of his renters and his property. We will be back to visit and stay here again.
My wife, daughter, and our Goldendoodle loved this quaint cabin right in the heart of Ruidiso! Perfect for a ski get away!
We loved this place. It is so close to the shops and restaurants, but it feels like you are in your own little world. Everything you could possibly need was provided, and all we needed was our clothes and food. I look forward to visiting this property again in the near future.
My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The cabin is cozy, beautifully decorated, and the hot tub is an added bonus. We came to celebrate our anniversary and enjoyed our stay so much that we will be back again.
What a wonderful home! The retro decor is so quaint. It makes the place feel like grandma's house in the woods. Every thing you could need is right here.
Being only a block away from the main street is very convenient for people who don't feel comfortable driving in an unfamiliar area. Restaurants, shopping, and a local park are within walking distance. Although it is close to the main road, there is not much street noise. The way the house is situated on the property makes you feel like you are out in the forest.
Brand new hot tub and deck area are pleasant for lounging in the summer afternoons or winter apres ski. There is a lower sitting area down the hill at the creek. This was a very relaxing place to read a book, or enjoy quiet conversation with a loved one. We had deer come by to visit nightly.
The owner is very invested in making sure visitors are happy and well accommodated. If there's a problem, I know he would be easy to reach and we wouldn't be stuck in a bad situation.
Special considerations: The second bedroom is separate from the main area of the house. It's better suited for older children and teens, rather than kids who might need something during the night.
There are many steps and hills. People with physical disabilities or injuries may have to take special care.
I hope to be able to visit again. In my opinion you can't get better than this!
This is a very cozy and comfortable cabin. The cable TV and wireless internet are an added bonus.. The Retro decor in charming. Everything needed is provided, just bring food & drink and your set. The convenience to town is great and the river in back provides a nice backdrop. Since we had beautiful weather during our visit back deck provided a nice place to relax and unwind. We didn't try the hot tub but, it did look inviting. I'd highly recommend it.
My husband and I are native Californians who have fallen in love with New Mexico. As a result, we visit every year, spending time in a different beautiful New Mexican location. This year's visit brought us to Ruidoso for 5 days. Our stay at Retro on the River was very comfortable and very conveniently located. The cabin is clean, quaintly furnished in a retro style (hence the name!) and was very roomy for the two of us. I appreciated the full sized washer/dryer available in the basement room. Located right behind the main strip of shopping/restaurants, you can't beat the location. We also enjoyed some fishing at Grindstone Lake which was very close by. You'll enjoy the sound of the river as you sit on the patio, and if you are visiting during warmer weather, you can enjoy the jacuzzi as well. Overall, we were very pleased with the accommodations and would recommend this place to anyone looking for a great time.
My wife and I stayed in the cabin for an anniversary trip and it was perfect. Tons to do within walking distance and a beautiful view off the back porch if you want to stay in. I would highly recommend it.
If you are a couple heading to Ruidoso; the Retro on the River Cabin should be your choice! And if you are traveling with a couple of small dogs like we did - even better. In addition to all the great existing features; the owner has just added a fabulous Deck next to the Hot Tub and we spent many hours sitting and enjoying the River while the Dogs were able to wander and play in the yard instead of being on the upper deck with not much to do.
The big seller is the convenience. Being able to walk to the Shops and Restaurants is great, but if you need groceries you’ll have to drive. They opened a new small Market behind Lucy’s Restaurant but they do not carry bread and milk – huh?
If this is your first trip to Ruidoso (it was ours) be prepared for very poor service. The shops owners are terrific but the workers at Restaurants, Bars and Casinos seem to hate their jobs and it reflects on the their service and attitudes. We visited many establishments and did not find one we would go back too.
Thanks Again for a great place to unwind for a few days.
We really enjoyed our stay. Loved the back deck and listening to the river.
Thanks! *****
We stayed at RETRO on THE RIVER for our anniversary and loved the place!! It was so peaceful and relaxing. We especially loved the deck, where we spent a lot of time, barbecuing, relaxing, watching birds and the deer below in the river. We saw about 10 deer that calmly walked up and drank out of the river and ate off the trees. I highly recommend this get away to all families and we will defiantly be going back to this peaceful cabin. And the bed was so comfortable!!!! We were in nature plus we could walk right over to a restaurant and enjoy the town. The best part is our fur baby loved the yard and going down to the river to play in.
My husband & I just completed a fabulous three night stay at the Retro on the River in Ruidoso & we couldn't have been more pleased. The owner was kind enough to permit our dogs so this was a perfect getaway vacation for our whole family.
The cottage was so inviting, with it's pleasant color schemes of blue, green & gray with great pops of color & kitschy decor. The kitchen had fabulous retro appliances reminiscent of some fifty years ago when I was a kid but all updated & clean as a whistle. It was great to be able to eat in when we didn't feel like going out for dinner.
The cottage has a wonderful tiered yard with steps down to the riverfront, which was a great workout for us as well as our dogs, but the hot tub quickly soothed any aching muscles we might have had.
This place is well within walking distance to all the shops & restaurants so we didn't feel we had to try to go everywhere in one day & easily walked one block, went "home" for a rest & a soak in the hot tub & headed out later.
Being so centrally located we took several small drives & were able to see quite a bit of the Ruidoso area. Since we were there in September it was truly lovely.
We also had the good fortune to observe the resident wildlife, a good natured deer walked along the river each morning to nibble at the oaks & we saw a mother & her two babies walk right across the parking lot into the center of town! There were lots of hummingbirds & crows which seem to enjoy the place too. None of these seemed put off by our dogs or our presence at all.
We highly recommend you check it out yourselves. This place has the most reasonable rates & you will get more than you bargained for!
What a wonderful wet time we had! It rained some everyday - which we really enjoyed. The cabin was perfect with everything needed. The sound of the river lulled us to sleep every night. Being right on the corner of Suddreth and Meacham allowed easy access to shops, restaurants, golf etc. The owner responded immediately to any questions, and made our entire trip a very pleasurable experience!
This was a getaway for just the two of us. It was super easy. I love using VRBO! We just searched and found this place, read about it, looked at the pics and thought we’d give it a whirl. Really glad that we did. What a jewel! It is really decorated well. Has full blown satellite TV (with DVR) and was a fantastic location from which to discover Ruidoso. We’ll be back!
My wife and dog and I stayed in this home for four nights. It initially felt small but after living in it, we were very comfortable - especially with the covered porch that looks out onto the creek below.
Both the living area and bedroom have AC/fan units (modern system so pretty quiet) in the wall which was nice because it was a little warm during our stay. Didn't need the AC, but the fan felt great at night.
Our dog had a great time running up and down the hill in the fenced yard. We thought it might be a little weird with the parking lot next to the yard but it is much higher than the yard so it was just fine. The spa was a nice touch after hiking in the afternoon. The home was very clean and well appointed with everything we needed for a stay.
This home is in a great location for walking around town and enjoying the atmosphere. We had a very nice stay and would definitely recommend it.
I will just start with LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.
The cabin is quant and vintage as described. The back porch is just lovely, we spent hours every evening watching the hummingbirds & deer. The river is a cool place to hang out in the morning for coffee. The downstairs is cute for the little ones, although we did not use it. The hot tub looked very well maintained. Perfect getaway. Don't pass this one up. It is a must for mid-town. Lola, our chocolate lab, enjoyed the yard and the back porch. The locals really took to her. :) All and all we are already planning a trip back!
We had a wonderful time, what a cute place. My daughter and my 3 grand kids loved this little vacation. I was so excited after seeing your place. I wanted to book it for the first week in August, but it was not available. We always try to go this time of year and used to stay @ Ruidoso Cabins on the upper canyon road. We have now found our new favorite place. Your place was awesome!
This was a nice little cabin. We walked right out the yard and a very short walk we were on the sidewalk shopping in the quaint little shops of Ruidoso. We are quite the clean freaks and this rental was very clean. We loved eating out on the deck watching the hummingbirds feed and looking at the river. We watched a pair of ducks swimming around in the river below use. Our 10 year old loved this Cabin. Even though in midtown with parking lot looking over in the yard this was no problem since everyone clears out by 5pm everyday and then you have almost complete privacy.
Loved this place! It was perfect for us. The place is clean and very comfortable. It is close to everything. We walked to all the shops and places to eat. The front of the property is in town and the back of the property is like being in the woods. We started and ended each day on the back porch looking at the river and enjoying the birds. The owner was amazing to work with. We decided last minute to make the trip to Ruidoso. I left a message for the owner on Thursday evening at 9:00 pm and heard from him immediately. By 11:00 pm I had the deal done and we left for Ruidoso the next morning at 6:00 am. It could not have gone smoother. We will definitely stay there again. Loved It!
The cabin itself is nice, and while it is not completely surrounded by nature it has more than enough pretty views. It's nice to sit out on the deck with the gas grill or in the hot tub and see so many tall trees, a nice change since we pretty much live in the desert in El Paso.
Plus it's so convenient to the main strip in midtown! Cabin is on street parallel to Sudderth so back of shops are across the street. We walked to the wine tasting room half a block away (there's another a few doors down past that) and hope to rent scooters from the place a block the other way next time we stay! We parked in the public lot next door and walked most places, including the natural food grocery store half a mile away.
Very nice and attentive owner. We will go back!
What a great place to kick back and forget about all your troubles. My buddies and I had a great time hanging out in the hot tub under the stars and catching up on old times. Our wives really enjoyed walking through town and shopping in the shops. I can't wait to come back and do it all over again!
Cabin is exactly as described. GREAT location. We walked just about everywhere. Walking distance to the river. Our dog loved walking with us exploring nature. The yard is out in nature itself. Lovely to sit in the yard and listen to the river. We saw a woodpecker. Lots of wonderful restaurants. O' Malley's corned beef and cabbage is not to be missed, nor lunch at Village Buttery. Having a king mattress was a treat, as well as having a pet friendly place. Our little doggie gives it top reviews. And so do we. Thanks Reed.
We really enjoyed the cabin. I told my husband that this is where I would like to stay anytime we want to stay at a VRBO in Ruidoso. This has been the best place we have stayed at for dogs. The fenced in area was great, Charlie and Walter our dogs, loved being able explore a new area without being on a leash. The hot tub was great and we loved the gazebo. We loved the retro feel of the cabin and I would love to get a stove and refrigerator like the ones in the cabin. It was nice being so close to the shopping and dining and being able to go get a drink without worrying about driving home. We had a great time and we look forward to staying again.
I brought my daughter and my parents here for a little getaway for my daughter's ninth birthday. We immediately fell in love with the cabin.
I absolutely adore the retro feel and look of the place, and the fact that I could bring my dog made our stay that much better! She is very much a family member.
I really love the close proximity to midtown, so we could walk everywhere. It was also very nice to walk out of the back door and go down to the river. So it was the best of both worlds.. Being close to the hustle and bustle, but also having the luxury of nature right out the back door! Beautiful cabin with all the anemities, wonderful location!
I will definitely be coming back, and very soon!
This cabin was perfect for our little family of 4. The living room furniture is quite comfortable! Perfect for a family to spread out on. The hot tub is great. The curtain makes it nice and private. The little deck down by the river is very relaxing on a warm day.
This cabin is in a great location one block off the main street of Sudderth. It’s nice and quiet out back, but super convenient to midtown. We drove to go skiing, but after that we just walked to the restaurant and then back home for a Hot Tub soak in the cold night air. Driving to Ski Apache was easy. We all get a little better at our skiing each time we go! The sweet deer that visit every day were nice, my kids loved feeding them. I give this cabin 5 stars because it is a nice clean cozy little cabin!
